Dealing with Potholes in South Carolina

Category: Our Blog

Potholes are a common sight on our roads and they can potentially be dangerous and cause an accident and a claim on your car insurance. With summer traditionally being the time when many people take to the roads, it is a good idea to be aware of the steps you can take to help avoid an encounter with a pothole damaging your vehicle or causing a nasty accident.

•    Keep an eye on the road ahead of you so that you can spot potholes while you still have time to react.

•    Drive around the pothole where it is safe to do so.

•    In the event that you can’t avoid the pothole it is best to avoid braking while driving over it as this can cause damage to tires and suspension. Try to apply the brakes before you reach the pothole so that when you do drive over it you are already going at a safe speed.

•    Take great care if you are driving on the highway, hitting a pothole at higher speeds could cause you to lose control or seriously damage your car.

No matter where you are driving, always be aware of the possibility of encountering a pothole. Some roads have more potholes than others and if you are driving in an area which you know has a high frequency of potholes it is a good idea to keep your speed low. Stay safe and help avoid a claim on your auto insurance (and the inconvenience of having your car off the road) this summer by taking care around potholes.
