Towing a Load Safely
The end of summer is a time when many South Carolina families return from their vacations. When you have been away for a significant period of time, chances are you will be pretty loaded down with luggage. Making sure your load is evenly distributed and secured. In particular, if you are towing a trailer or caravan, it is essential for your safety and to help reduce the risk of having an accident or a car insurance claim.
Here are a few guidelines to take into consideration when packing up your car at the end of the vacation:
• When towing, check that your vehicle is rated to tow the specific load you are carrying. The user manual should have all the information you need.
• Make sure the load is well secured and if possible, stop shortly into your journey to re-secure as things often work their way loose after a few miles.
• Try to distribute the load as evenly as possible across the trailer.
• When you have small or loose items, covering with a tarp can help prevent anything falling out.
• Make sure your number plate is still visible once the trailer has been loaded.
When you are towing anything, it is important to keep in mind the fact that your vehicle will be less maneuverable and drive more slowly. You will also have less braking time so make sure you leave an adequate gap between your vehicle and the car in front.
