Keeping inventory of everything you own is very important for your future security, as it allows you to keep a record of what valuables you possess, in case disaster or hardships come about later in life. Home inventory lists are rather easy to compile. You are going to want to start with all of your latest purchases and your most valuable items. This might include electronics, appliances, antiques, or expensive jewelry. If you worked hard for it, you definitely want it in your inventory!

For appliances and electronics, you should write a description of each item, including its manufacturer and model. Try to find the serial number for the item and include it in the inventory list too. For jewelry and clothing, break down your inventory list into a few different categories. You should describe each piece of clothing, how much you paid for it, where it was purchased from, and any receipts. Jewelry is a commonly stolen item, so ensure that you have detailed information regarding your jewelry.

For antiques and furniture, the basic guidelines apply to them as well. You should list the manufacturer, price, date of purchase, and include receipts. If the item is an antique, you may want to have it appraised on occasion to ensure that you have the proper value listed. Keep all appraisal records with the inventory list.
