A Guide to Preparing for a Flood
For many regions in the United States the rainy season is just around the corner. With loads of rain falling from the sky, there is a risk of flooding. Flooding can be caused by too much rainfall and the ground being unable to soak it up rapidly enough or rivers and streams overflowing. Either way, if you are in a region that is prone to flooding, there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself and your family for these kinds of natural disasters. Compiled in this article are some tips to help get you ready for this particular type of natural disaster.
Ready.gov lists the following five steps to help you prepare for a flood:
-Start compiling an emergency kit and make sure to discuss a family communication plan in the event of a flood.
-Before purchasing or building a home make sure it is not in a flood plain, unless you plan to elevate and reinforce your home.
-Make sure to Elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk, this will prevent damage.
-Consider installing ‘check valves’ to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.
-Construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering the building. It’s also a great idea to seal walls and windows in basements and garages.
The most important of these five steps is building an emergency flood kit. Some of the things that should be included in the kit are important documents, drinking water, food (enough for three days), medications, formula (if you have an infant), a battery-powered weather radio, extra batteries, a flashlight, a whistle to help signal rescuers, a first aid kit, a knife, and a can opener for your non-perishable food items.
While everyone hopes to never have to need an emergency flood kit, it is best to have one ready in case you actually do need it. As the old saying goes, “better to be safe than sorry!”
