3 Ways to Celebrate March as National Nutrition Month
There’s no better time to start living healthier and eating more nutritious meals than the month of March, National Nutrition month. So, whether you’re looking to educate others on the importance of nutrition or want to make a lifestyle change yourself, here are three ways to get started.
One of the simplest ways to celebrate National Nutrition month is to organize a weekly shopping club. Get together with a group of friends and go grocery shopping together. Look at nutritional information, discuss items before purchasing, and help each other choose healthier foods, by suggesting more nutritional options. Participants could buy oranges instead of orange juice and yogurt instead of full-fat ice cream. Try turning it into a competition, the individual with the healthiest cart of food at the end of each trip gets treated to a movie or a healthy dinner.
A second way to celebrate involves organizing a community food fair. Invite local restaurants to bring samples of the foods they sell their establishment. Ask them to provide examples of their more nutritious food options, along with nutritional information and suggest ways customers can eat more nutritious meals at their establishments. They might suggest skipping the French fries and choosing a side salad or other healthy vegetable, or skipping the soda and drinking tea or water. This also allows the restaurants’ customers to suggest ways the restaurants can offer more nutritional options on their menus, as well.
A third way to celebrate the most nutritious of months is to plant a vegetable garden, whether it’s a personal garden or a community garden. Be sure to include weatherproof cards that contain the nutrition information for each vegetable type. If this is a community garden, go a step further and offer brochures that list the health benefits each vegetable offered as well as a list of healthy recipe ideas.
Whether it’s a community event or a small get-together, celebrating National Nutrition month can be celebrated in fun and engaging ways. Use these ideas to foster nutritional awareness in your community, and perhaps learn a few things yourself.
