Five 4th of July Safety Tips for Families
Celebrating the 4th of July is one of the highlights of the summer, and many families are prepared for a holiday filled with swimming, grilling and of course, fireworks. When you’re making your plans for the 4th of July, it’s important not to overlook safety.
1. Teach Kids Firework Safety
You probably already know that you should keep kids far away from consumer fireworks. But you should also talk to them about the dangers. If they see other children trying to handle them, they should leave and tell the nearest adult.
2. Have an Emergency Plan
Hopefully, your family has access to a fire extinguisher. But at the very least, keep water or a hose nearby. If one of your fireworks is a dud, never relight it. Instead, douse it with water before you get rid of it.
3. Curb the Alcohol
Drinking is a big part of the 4th of July, but you should know when you’ve had too much. Allowing inebriated people to operate grills and fireworks is a sure path to serious injury.
4. Cook Safely
Treat your grill like you treat fireworks. Use it on a flat surface far away from flammable materials, kids, and pets. Also, always be sure it has been cleaned properly and that you are cooking meat thoroughly.
5. Watch Out for Little Ones
Most babies and toddlers will be mesmerized by a firework display at home or elsewhere, but be prepared for the chance that your child could be disturbed by noise and crowds. And if they’re big enough to walk, keep an eye on them when things get hectic.
Remember, if you’re unsure about doing your own fireworks, taking your family to a fireworks show is much safer. Wishing you and your family a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!
