Losing Power in Winter: What to Do

Category: EducationalOur Blog

Freezing rain, sleet and snow can damage power lines. If that occurs, then a power outage may result. There are several things you can do if a power outage occurs. Below is a list of tips for handling a power outage:

  1. Use flashlights: It is best to use a flashlight instead of a candle. If you choose to use candles, then you will need to keep them away from flammable items. You will also need to avoid leaving them unattended.
  2. Unplug appliances: You should unplug your television, DVD player, garage door opener and other appliances in your home. A voltage irregularity can occur if all of the appliances in your home are plugged up when the power turns back on. Fortunately, unplugging your appliances can prevent that from happening.
  3. Dress warmly: You will need to dress in layered clothing. Wear clothing that is lightweight and loose fitting. You may also want to wear mittens, scarves and a hat.
  4. Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite: Hypothermia and frostbite are two conditions that can occur if a person is exposed to cold temperatures. Both of these conditions are medical emergencies, so it is important to recognize the symptoms. Disorientation, uncontrollable shivering and slurred speech are some of the signs of hypothermia. If a person experiences hypothermia, then he or she will need to get to a warm location, remove wet clothing and drink warm beverages. You should avoid Alcohol and caffeine. You should also call emergency services right away if a person shows any symptoms of hypothermia. A loss of feeling in the tip of the nose, fingers, toes and ear lobes is one of the most common signs of frostbite. Frostbite can also cause the extremities to turn pale or white. You should also call emergency services if you suspect someone is suffering from frostbite.
