Preparing for a Major Snow Storm

Category: EducationalOur Blog

A snow storm could literally paralyze communities for days. People need to stock up on essential supplies before a blizzard arrives. Power outages account for some of the biggest concerns associated with the aftermath of heavy snowfall. Homeowners should consider buying a generator that is capable of producing a few thousand watts. A generator may be used to charge mobile phones, laptops and rechargeable batteries.

Additionally, it’s possible to turn on a microwave or a space heater with the power that’s available from this important equipment. When preparing a generator for a blackout during a blizzard, it’s important to have a sufficient supply of fuel. A few days before a snow storm arrives, homeowners should fill up several fuel containers at the local gas station before the supplies run out. When it comes to safety, generators must be placed in a well-ventilated area to prevent the accumulation of harmful carbon monoxide. The best place to turn on a generator is inside a car garage with the doors opened.

Heavy snow fall and ice could knock down trees that in turn land on power lines. There is a high risk of live wires falling on the ground after a major blizzard. People should avoid at all costs any wires that have become loose or detached. There is a high risk of receiving an electrical shock from such wires that are buried within snow.

Stocking up on bottled water is also an essential component of snow storm preparation. Plumbing pipes can burst in freezing conditions. Sometimes, municipalities might have to shut down water supply lines during snow storms. It’s also practical to boil some pots of water and store them before a snow storm hits. Such a water supply can be used to wash any fresh fruit and vegetables that might still be available at home.
