Keeping Babies Safe: Tips
Infants are naturally curious and willing to play around with just about anything in sight and reach. Therefore, parents need to make sure that their precious little wonders do not have easy access to hazardous products at home. There are many different things children may be willing to put into their mouths just for the sake of tasting something new. Some items may cause choking hazards due to the obstruction of airways in the respiratory system. Other things that are ingested can cause serious problems with the digestive system. Coins and batteries are some common metal things that can be easily ingested by toddlers. Non-edible items must be kept out of the reach of youngsters who get the chance to spend time along in kitchens and dining rooms.
In today’s high-tech age, some gadgets and electronic devices can be considered hazards to small kids. For example, cords and cables could get entangled around the necks of children during play time. The metal edges of USB charging cables and other accessories could also cause injuries if they’re placed inside the mouth. Additionally, display screens on smartphones and tablets may shatter if they’re handled roughly by playful children. It’s even a good idea to entirely cover a large HDTV to prevent any accidents involving an LCD, LED or plasma screen.
Floor surfaces in a house may also play a role in the overall safety for toddlers. Hardwood and tile floors tend to be very slippery, thereby increasing the risk of slips and falls for children who have just learned how to walk on their own. Infants who crawl should do so on carpeted floors that are free of any loose debris and fasteners. Parents should check the edges of carpets to ensure that nails, screws, and other similar hardware parts do not protrude outward.
