Staying safe during severe weather
Severe weather can strike at any time, and sometimes even meteorologists cannot provide ample warning about fast-moving storms. This is why you need to be exceptionally careful during those times. Here is some advice for staying safe during severe weather:
Find Cover Immediately
The first step is to find cover immediately whenever any type of severe weather forms. Staying inside your home, workplace or even a retail storefront can provide ample protection. If you cannot go inside, then try to find a sheltered location such as below an underpass or inside a car. This will protect you from the weather, wind and debris.
Never Try To Drive Through Flooded Areas
If the severe weather causes flooding, avoid any flooded areas – even if the water doesn’t appear too deep. While you might think the water is shallow enough to pass through on foot or in a car, avoid doing so. You have no way to know the actual depth of the water. There could be deep holes or other issues below the water’s surface.
Avoid Standing near Tall Trees or Structures
Lightning is a dangerous thing that often accompanies severe weather, so avoid standing near or under tall trees and structures. The lightning will seek out the easiest path to the ground. This makes it more likely to strike tall trees, antennas or even streetlights. You could be seriously injured or killed if you are too close to a lightning strike.
Stay Away From Windows
If wind or hail are part of the severe weather you are experiencing, then stay away windows. Wind can crack windows. It can throw debris into windows leading to flying glass. Hail can also punch through windows. You want to stay far away from windows during severe weather. Close curtains or blinds in a home if possible until the weather has passed.
