Staying Safe At The Beach Or Pool
Swimming is a fun activity for people of all ages. However, there are several things to keep in mind while you are at the beach or by the pool. Below is a list of tips for staying safe while swimming this summer:
Put The Appropriate Barriers Around The Pool
If you have a pool at your home, make sure to place appropriate barriers around it in order to prevent children from falling in. Many children drown in their own backyard, so it is important to constantly supervise your children.
Stay Hydrated
Even if you are not thirsty, you should still drink plenty of water. It is possible to be dehydrated and not even know it. In fact, if you do not drink water until you are thirsty, then you are probably already dehydrated. Do not drink beverages with caffeine or alcohol in them; they have a tendency to dehydrate you.
Make Sure Everyone Knows How To Swim
Simplistic as it sounds, people who do not know how to swim or are inexperienced are more likely to drown. Your family members should take age-appropriate swimming or water orientation courses.
Protect Your Skin
It is easy to get sunburned if you will be outside for a long time, so make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. This is especially important if you will be outside between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which are the times when the sun’s rays are the strongest. You should wear a sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. If you have very sensitive skin, then you will probably need a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Remember that a sunburn can lead to dehydration, which makes swimming more risky.
Learn CPR And First Aid
It is important to be prepared for a possible emergency. Learning CPR and first aid is one of the best things that you can do in order to prepare for an emergency.
